5 Remedies to Calm Your Cold

We all the know the drill when winter rolls around– time to pull out warm coats, hats, gloves, and most importantly, Kleenex boxes! In most cases, antibiotics won’t be prescribed to help the common cold so we have to find other alternatives for temporary relief.

1. Warm Liquids
Whether you’re battling a sore throat or an irritating cough, sipping on a warm cup of tea is a soothing option to try. If that’s not your cup of tea, try a glass of warm lemon water, juice, or clear broth.

2. Saltwater Gargle
Another home remedy to try is a saltwater gargle. A few times each day, dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle until the pain goes away. While it may not be the best tasting solution, the saltwater helps to flush out the virus causing you pain.

3. Vapor Rub
While it may not stop a runny nose, applying vapor rub to your chest may help ease your coughing symptoms. You can also apply under the nose to help with a stuffy nose, or rub on your aches and pains for short-term relief.

4. Add Moisture to the Air
When cold-weather conditions set in and the air begins to dry out, bringing out your humidifier may alleviate the unwanted symptoms of winter colds. By adding moisture to the air, congestion and soreness in your throat will likely be reduced.

5. Rest & Hydration
Last but certainly not least, you can never go wrong with rest and hydration. Runny nose, congestion, sore throat, you name it. Giving your body time to heal, paired with plenty of fluids, is the ultimate recipe to get you back on your feet in no time.

Although these remedies won’t cure your cold completely, they can provide the temporary relief you’re looking for! What home remedies do you have for fighting off a winter cold?
