Low Fat Substitutes That Don’t Suck

Sometimes, you just need a cookie. Rather than totally derailing your healthy lifestyle with a pack (or three) of powdered donuts, reach for your favorite recipe and try one of these low-fat substitutes so you can eat your favorite breakfast, lunch or dinner, guilt-free!

  1. Butter
Applesauce and plain yogurt are awesome replacements for butter. For the best texture and flavor, replace no more than half the amount of the fat listed in the recipe. For ½ cup butter, use ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce and save 44 grams of fat AND 400 calories!

For carrot, banana or spice cakes, try substituting an equal amount of Mashed Ripe Bananas for your butter! (Don’t use this in your chocolate or vanilla baked goods unless you want that banana flavor, though!)

  2. Eggs
Trade 1 whole egg for 2 egg whites and save more than 10 grams of fat AND 100 calories!
  3. Sour Cream
Switch out the Sour Cream in your favorite dressing or dip recipe for Plain Yogurt (we <3 Greek!) or half plain yogurt, half cottage cheese. No one will know the difference!
  4. Salad Dressing
Ditch the calorie and fat-laden salad dressings for a simply delicious sprinkling of lemon juice or balsamic vinegar.
  5. Breading
Craving breaded chicken or fish? Try crushed bran cereal or rolled oats instead of breadcrumbs for a tasty, lower-fat crunch.
