With the new year in full swing and the glamour of resolutions beginning to wear thin, it’s time to boost your motivation to get active. This is the perfect time to look ahead and set a goal that you can start working towards now. So, why not make it a half marathon!? Here are a few reasons why tackling a half marathon is a completely amazing and doable goal for you this year.
The biggest hurdle to first get over when thinking about running a half marathon is signing up. Once you do, that means it’s time to hit the pavement and start training!
Since winning The Biggest Loser I am constantly looking for new, exciting ways to challenge myself and stay healthy. So this past year I challenged myself to run 13 half marathons in 12 months! Something I learned very quickly in my first few races was that while the distance is definitely a challenge, it’s not impossible. Half marathons give you the conquering feeling you love without taking a giant chunk of your life training for it. It takes about 3 months of training to conquer a half marathon. While it seems like a big commitment (and it is!), the sense of accomplishment and physical conditioning is much greater than any other type of race (save a full marathon of course). The finish line is something you’ve ran more than just the 13.1-mile race for and crossing it is an accomplishment you can be proud of.
There are a lot of great half marathon training schedules on the internet and most start easy and don’t contain as many super long runs as you might imagine! The training regimen will help you increase endurance, build lean muscle and burn TONS of calories. You’ll start to see big changes in your body and figure after just a couple of weeks!
Another great reason to choose a half marathon this year is that there is never a shortage of races. Half marathons are popping up everywhere and come in all different themes. Some of my favorites were:
- The Hapalua Half Marathon in beautiful Honolulu, Hawaii
- Rock N’ Roll Half Marathon in Seattle! Rock N’ Roll Half Marathons are so much fun! Each mile there’s a new band playing live music for you to jam out to.
- I also hear Bulu Box has a pretty cool Half Marathon in the works as well. ;)
Regardless of where you live, there’s usually a half marathon within a short driving distance. But why not make a trip out of it and pick a destination you wouldn’t mind sticking around for a few days after the race to see the sights!
So this year why not go for it and sign up for your first half marathon! You’ll surprise yourself with what you can do. My advice, sign up with a friend so you can help motivate and push each other along the way.
